To lie, a young person has to:

  • Know the truth
  • Predict what you believe
  • Suppress their own impulse to blurt it out
  • And deliver an alternative version convincingly

That’s executive function, theory of mind, and self-regulation in action.

It’s not always pretty, but it is sophisticated.

So no, lying doesn’t mean they’ve lost their moral compass.

It means they’re in the middle of building one.
