At Synapse, we believe behavioural health coaching is an investment. An investment in helping your child deal with today’s challenges while preparing them to face future struggles with confidence. It’s an investment in feeling better now and doing better in the long run.

Think of it the way you might think about academic tutoring. Parents don’t expect a child to master maths or pass an exam after one or two lessons. You invest in a series of sessions because you know it takes time, practice, and guidance for learning to stick. Coaching works in the same way — but instead of exam skills, it builds coping skills, emotional resilience, and confidence to navigate life.

That’s why Synapse behavioural coaching programmes are built around 10 sessions. Parents often ask: why ten? The answer is simple. It’s what works.

1. Trust takes time

Young people don’t always open up straight away. Especially if they’re anxious, withdrawn, or feeling low. It usually takes a couple of sessions for them to feel safe, heard, and understood. Without that foundation, progress is shallow.

2. Skills need practice, not just theory

Coaching isn’t just about talking. It’s about doing. Whether it’s managing emotions, building confidence, or getting unstuck, new skills need to be learned, tried out, and refined. Ten sessions give enough space for growth, setbacks, and breakthroughs.

3. Change has to stick

Short bursts of support may feel easier, but they rarely lead to lasting results. Ten sessions provide the time to:

  • Build momentum

  • Grow confidence and capability

  • Navigate setbacks without giving up

  • Avoid dependency on the coach

  • Strengthen life skills your child can carry forward

4. Progress needs checkpoints

Our programmes include mid-point and end-point reviews. These are moments for your child (and you) to reflect on progress, adjust the focus, and take ownership of what comes next. These check-ins only make sense in a longer arc of support.

5. Ten is the “sweet spot”

We’ve tested shorter programmes — they don’t deliver so well.

In short

We don’t recommend fewer sessions because they don’t work as well.

Ten sessions are the minimum effective dose of structured, supervised, action-focused coaching. Just like tutoring, it’s an investment: one that pays off by helping your child build the skills they need not only to cope with today, but to flourish tomorrow.
